The new Sabritec high endurance, high-speed Twinax contact design has achieved over 25,000 mating cycles without contact degradation, compared to the conventional Mil-Spec. pin/socket contacts which are only certified at 500 mating cycles.
Using the Hypertac hyperboloid technology, the contact has an extremely low contact impedance, reduced insertion /extraction force, negligible contact resistance and excellent mate/de-mate endurance over a large number of mating cycles.
Initially designed to meet the Sata 1.0 Communications Protocol, this technology has been used successfully on an airborne mission critical application and in particular within a SATA-1.0a data transmission system.
Both the characteristic impedance and high frequency response of this contact have been optimised to support up to 1.5Gbit/s data rates. This optimisation process includes high speed modelling and simulation using specialist software to achieve the design parameters.
The Twinax contact technology can be easily implemented into standard sized 5 keyed cavities for use in popular connector housings. It is intended to extend this breakthrough technology into coax, triax and quadrax contacts.
ABOUT HYPERTAC
Hypertac, a part of Smiths Interconnect, is a leading supplier of high reliability, high performance interconnect solutions and electrical/electronic connectors. The company has particular expertise in the rapid development of innovative interconnect solutions for high reliability applications in military, aerospace, industrial, mass transit, test & measurement and medical electronics markets.
The Hypertac range includes printed circuit board connectors, modular, rectangular, filtered ARINC and circular connectors. Hypertac connectors achieve outstanding performance through the use of patented Hyperboloid contacts.
Hypertac hyperboloid contact is an advanced design that satisfies the most demanding performance requirements. The shape of the contact sleeve is formed by wires strung at an angle to the socket axis. When the pin is inserted into the sleeve, the wires stretch around it, providing a number of linear contact paths. This ensures high reliability, a high number of mating cycles, shock and vibration immunity, low contact resistance and low insertion and extraction force.
